Selection Guide for Electronic Cooling Fans

An industrial electronic cooling fans is a device that circulates air in order to cool the environment or the equipment they are connected to. The cooling fans are often used in computers, HVAC devices, thermal energy equipment, etc. Although they are one of the most familiar devices in the industry, still, they are ill-understood. Especially when it comes to selecting electronic cooling fans, it is very important to consider multiple factors in the process. This post guides the selection process and consideration factors of the cooling fans.

Electronic Cooling Fans Selection Process

As discussed earlier, the electronic cooling fans are used for multiple industrial applications. Although the selection criteria of the fans differ according to the application, the factors of consideration remain the same. The step-by-step guidelines for selecting a cooling fan are detailed as follows.

Input Power:

The first consideration factor for selecting a cooling fan is the input power required. The electronic cooling fans work on an electric motor that derives energy in voltages. There are multiple voltage motors or fans available such as 12VDC to 115VDC. Depending on the availability and requirement of input power, the cooling fan must be selected.

Airflow Requirements:

The airflow impedance is an important consideration for industrial cooling fans. Here impedance is the resistance to airflow. Generally, manufacturers mention the airflow against static or environmental pressure but during the industrial application, the airflow impedance raises against the static pressure. It is generally known as the backpressure. If the fan does not compliment airflow requirements for specific backpressure, then it may cause serious damage to the system. This is why the fan must be selected with marginal airflow. For example, if the calculated airflow requirement for zero backpressure is 50 CFM the fan must be selected with 75-100 CFM airflow for operating backpressure.

Fan Type:

There are multiple types of electronic cooling fans and blowers that are suitable for various applications. The types of electronic cooling fans differ according to the type of input AC/DC, axial or rotational airflow, functionality, etc. The types of electronic cooling fans and blowers to be chosen from are as follows:

Fan Size:

Like other industrial fans, industrial electronic cooling fans are also available in different sizes. A large fan size does not pronounce higher airflow. Therefore, depending on the application and requirements, the fan sizes can be conventionally chosen from 40x40x10, 80x80x25, and 120x120x25. However, the common sizes for modern designs are 40mm, 52mm, 60mm, 80mm, and 120mm. The customization of cooling fans can lead the sizes from 25mm to 254mm.

Bearings:

Bearing is a foundation of the fan. It gives an idea about the stability and durability of the fan. Since the bearing is the footing for the cooling fan, there are 2 different types of bearings used for mounting the industrial cooling fans, detailed as follows:

  • Ball Bearing: The ball bearing is the most common footing for electronic cooling fans. This foundation offers over 60000 hours of the lifecycle to the fan. It is often used for the fans that are exposed to high temperature and speed.
  • Sleeve Bearing: This type of bearing is a self-lubricating foundation for the fan. However, it only offers 30000 hours of the lifecycle. This makes the fan only sufficiently durable for lower speed applications.

The guidelines for selecting electronic cooling fan are discussed here, it is also important to understand that you must source electronic cooling fans from trusted suppliers like Sofasco. The company has been supplying quality electrical fans since 1981. They offer a range of electrical fans from axial to the centrifugal fans. Their clientele ranges from medical equipment to the aviation sector.
